know nevada better than anyone. that is your town and you write extensively on the demographics, the change. we have talked about reid and his victory there and certainly some would have said was beatible but not by sharon angle. with that said, you have got the president on the ground in nevada. why is that -- i guess a perfect place if you will for this launch to hear from him in about 40 minutes or so? >> well, tamron, even though we are not a border state, we are an emblem of what's happening in this country. the hispanic population is burgeoning for sometime. now about a quarter of the state. it was about 20% of the electorate and talk about the election results that john mccain was talking about yesterday. barack obama won the latino vote about 55 points here in 2012. about the same percentage that he won by in 2008. and look at where the president is going today to make the announcement. going to a high school which is about 62% hispanic population of kids. maybe the biggest problem in this state facing the education system is a lot of hispanic kids who have come here and

[video clip] >> i announced nevada would comply with the affordable care act as they related to the expansion of medicare services. as a result, some 78,000 more nevadans will have coverage without facing the new tax penalties imposed by the affordable care act. [applause] the federal law allows us to shift the mental health and other state spending to other sources say. the general on nearly $25 million over the biennium. over the next six years, this will create up to 8000 new health-care jobs and inject over half a billion dollars into where state's economy. as i noted before, we must increase taxes to bear the increased cost of the affordable care act, but the issue of the long-term health care costs remain. as such, i believe we must ask certain medicaid patients to have a modest contribution. i will insist nv will be able to opt out of the expansion program in early -- in later years should circumstances change. president obama is set to lay out his plan on immigration proposal in nevada. here to talk about it is gloria borger, and cornell belcher, and political contributor and republican consultant margaret hoover. gloria, let me start with you. what is so different this time around for the republicans? simply the reality of november's election? >> yeah, they are worried about their own survival as a political party. one way to survive as a party is to broaden your base and not remain hostage to a single part of it. and i think that has been the problem for the republican party when you talk about john mccain. when john mccain was challenged from the right in 2010, when he was running for re-election to the senate, he became much more conservative on immigration policy. now i think he's sort of unshackled and he's back to the position he was in in 2005 and 2007. i mean, you know, i spent a lot of time with him on that straight talk express when he was running for the presidency in 2007. and i remember him telling me that he was stunned at the vitriolic reaction within his own party to i

nevada. for 30 years, republicans and democrats in nevada have said they don't want nuclear waste buried in nevada. anything that touches the local state touches the constituents, and touches the people who are going to vote for them. when we get to national issues, however, it is different situation. the number out of 233 republicans and house, only 16 of them were elected from districts carried by president obama. up to 200 democrats -- of the 200 democrats, only eight or nine or elected from districts carried by governor romney. that means the greatest danger to these republicans and democrats is in the primaries. what happens if you or a member of congress, you are great concern is to protect yourself in those primaries from people coming at you from the left and right. congresswoman edwards touched on it. there is only one way around this. it takes leadership to provide cover in politics, to get people the courage to stand up and do what is right. how do you get there? members of congress -- i have been in this town for 30 years. they don't know each other anymore. they don't spend

nevada and is a gun owner, obviously it's hard for him but he's not up for re-election for four years and that if he runs again. there are many democrats up in 2014 from pro gun states who will be really vulnerable voting on something an assault weapons ban. i think what -- sort of a back door escape for the senate will be to put this pressure on the floor that would allow for an assault weapons ban but leave it open to amendment, in other words, it could be weakened easily by other amendments on the floor. it will kind of give cover to democrats who will be vulnerable from this, but the ultimate result will be, i think, just universal background checks. that's the maximum you're going to see here just for political reasons. and i think that even if the future, it's going to be hard, even if the congress is democratic on both sides because democrats are vulnerable on this issue as well as republicans. >> our power panel, thanks for being patient where me. i appreciate it. i appreciate your time. of course, we are following this breaking news elsewhere today coming out of massachusetts
